Weird Science: “climategate” And The Lack Of Critical Thinking
A recent article in The Washington Times called “Climate scientists to fight back at skeptics” discusses the ways that important climatologists are feeling pressure to fight back and respond to their critics, in light of the issue that has been referred to as “Climategate.” Emails between two important climate scientists were made public recently, and made climatologists and their published facts seem questionable to the public. The emails linking the two climate scientists indicated that they had overlooked key data points to “massage data” in favor of certain conclusions.
In the piece, Stephen H. Schneider, a Stanford professor, says that he feels the “social contract” between policymakers and scientists has been shattered and needs to be restored. He is quoted as saying,
“What I am trying to do is head off something that will be truly ugly… I don’t want to see a repeat of McCarthyesque behavior and I’m already personally very dismayed by the horrible state of this topic, in which the political debate has almost no resemblance to the scientific debate.”
Numerous climatologists connected with the National Academy of Sciences, together with Schneider, participated in an email exchange in which they discussed the formation of a nonprofit group with a goal of raising finances for a New York Times ad which would respond forcefully to their critics.
We are led to inquire why the “social contract” has been damaged between politicians and climate scientists, as a result of this latest twist in the tale of “Climategate.” Are the climate researchers’ scientific findings presented to us entirely faulty? Or could it be a result of policymakers who have relied on the “science experts” to tell them what to accept as true rather than using their own critical thinking abilities to consider the conclusions proposed by the experts?
Science, at its most simple level, is all about argument, conflicting opinions, and mixed interpretations. One of the pivotal necessities of any scientific concept is that its conclusions be falsified and tested, however what constitutes a “proven fact” is arguable. Because of this, scientists fight; that is simply what scientists do. Scientists engage in conflicts concerning everything; from evaluating facts to how to execute experiments. Many graduate students have been witnesses to heated conflicts over the interpretations of scientific records, where scientists occasionally even attack one another’s reputations at conferences! Hence, the fact that climatologists disagree about the data and what it signifies ought to come as no shock. Nonetheless, science stops being “scientific” when one point of view ceases to be questioned, in a “this is the complete truth” perspective.
“Climategate” is undoubtedly the result of a sloppy treatment of the records, but it is also likely the product of bias. Scientific impartiality was placed on the back burner when the supposition that human CO2 emissions caused global warming grew to be the only theory for why polar ice caps were melting. This individual, incredibly small interpretation of data was offered as the total explanation behind climate change, while other facts, such as particulate matter by aerosols or the influences of solar activity were downplayed. Anyone with adequate tools in analytical thinking along with a simple understanding of science can understand that to offer a single set of facts as the lone source of a trend while downplaying other records spells trouble. It does not take a specially taught climatologist–or even a scientist–to see that.
Policymakers, journalists, and the general public should learn to take responsibility for their own awareness regarding science and the scientific process. The keys to forming a good viewpoint concerning climate science data are an awareness of how science operates and the ground rules of science. The ability to evaluate scientific claims can be learned by anyone. If first graders are able to learn physics or chemistry, then journalists and politicians, as well as the average adult, can study the basics and from there think critically regarding scientific conclusions.
Basically, “Climategate” is a problem with education and politics, not science. The conflict between climatologists is precisely the way science functions and is not out of the ordinary. There is a battle over climate records, as there ought to be. But errors in judgment were likely made because politicians viewed climate change from a narrow lens without analytically evaluating opposing points of view. We don’t necessarily need more experts; we need additional science education for all. Issues such as “Climategate” may never have happened if policymakers had learned to consider scientific statements for themselves and not only rely on others to dictate scientific opinion to them. However, if funding for education continues to be reduced, as is currently occurring in California to make up for the fiscal loss the state has experienced, this crisis will only become worse. In order to re-establish the “social contract” between scientists and politicians it might be a good idea to demand that both scientists and policymakers take responsibility for their own awareness of those scientific issues that influence politics.
